The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is a vaulted brickwork "beehive" (tholos) tomb, close to the ancient Thracian capital of Seuthopolis.
The tomb is part of a large Thracian necropolis. It comprises a narrow corridor and a round burial chamber, both decorated with murals representing a Thracian couple at a ritual funeral feast. The monument dates back to the 4th century BC.
The murals are memorable for the splendid horses and especially for the gesture of farewell, in which the seated couple grasp each other's wrists in a moment of tenderness and equality. The paintings are Bulgaria's best-preserved artistic masterpieces from the Hellenistic period.

14.30 h – Drive to the valley of the Thracian kings.
Few km from Kazanak, you will visit Goliamata Kosmatka Tomb dating back to 5-4th c. BC belonging to the Thracian King Seuthes III; the unique tomb at Ostrousha Funeral Complex (5th c. BC) and Svetitsata Tomb belonging to the mighty Thracian King Teres who reigned during the 5th c. BC.
In the Goliama Kosmatka (Big Hairy) Mound is situated one of the most majestic and rich Thracian tombs with a completely preserved grave of a Thracian king, buried with his horse. It was built in the 5th century BC and consists of three chambers and a corridor with total length of 26 meters. The first room is rectangular, and a skeleton of a horse has been discovered in it. The second room is round, with a beautiful 450 cm tall dome-shaped roof. There is a marble door with images of people at the entrance of this room. The third room is a monolithic granite block - a sarcophagus with a weight of about 60 tons. There is an inner room, carved into it with great precision, and inside it is the stone bed of the Thracian ruler who was buried here. More than 20 gold objects with high artistic value have been discovered inside the sarcophagus - a gold wreath with oak leaves and acorns, a wine chalice, horses' applications, a wine glass, gold coins from the time of King Sevt, a deer's head, a goddess's head, as well as numerous silver and bronze vessels. Of no less value is the iron sword with golden application, a bronze sword, a helmet, an armor-plate, as well as other weapons. The bronze head of a life-size man with a beard with eyes made of precious minerals is quite intriguing. The size of the tomb and the great value of the treasures, discovered there, prove the fact that an important Thracian ruler was buried here.
The Thracian complex in the Ostrusha Mound near the town of Shipka was built in the middle of the 4th century BC, and it used to function until the 4th century. The complex is situated on an area of 100 square meters, and consists of five rectangular and one round rooms. The tomb was constructed with two monolithic stone blocks with a total weight of 60 tons. The first block has the shape of a cube, where the tomb is located, and the other one is used as a covering construction. The ceiling of the tomb provokes special interest - inside the precisely carved ornaments you can see portraits of people and figures of animals and flowers. A horse's skeleton, weapons, a silver jug, silver decorations for horses' ammunition, coins from the time of Philip of Macedon, pottery and other objects of high artistic value have been discovered in the mound.
In the summer of 2004, during archaeological excavations at the Svetitsata mound near Shipka, a tomb was found. It was made of stone slabs and presumed to contain a royal burial dating from the middle or the second half of the 5th century BC.
It was at this archaeological site that a unique gold mask was uncovered. Weighing 690 g, the funerary mask is almost ten times as heavy as the ones excavated in Mycenae and Trebeniste. The archaeologists also found a bronze armour, an icon sword, arrow and spearheads, as well as red-figured and silver vases.
Scholars consider the armor to be a unique find. Several armour pieces of similar make have been found so far, but this is the first time ever that a finding reveals how the pectoral and the back plate were linked.

16.00 h – Departure back to Sofia.
19.15 h – Drop off in your hotel.
